Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah, the ruler of the Qutub Shahi dynasty, founded the city of Hyderabad in 1591 along the banks of the River Musi. In 1687, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb captured Hyderabad, marking the beginning of Mughal rule. During this time, Asaf Jah was appointed Governor (Nizam-ul-Mulk), establishing the Asaf Jahi dynasty that ruled Hyderabad for over two centuries until a year after India gained independence.
The Asaf Jahi rulers, known as the Nizams of Hyderabad, governed for seven generations. Their immense wealth and grandeur are legendary, exemplified by the renowned “Jewels of the Nizams.” Hyderabad was the richest and largest princely state in India, with a cultural heritage as opulent as its rulers.
